WIMAX vs LTE

WIMAX vs LTE
According to the huge effects of broadband internet in the past and also the attainment of mobile phone. So, today the point of broadband is very important that why WIMAX an LTE were interested and argued about the best technology.

Both WIMAX and LTE were 4G technology which aim to improve the limitations of 3G technology or third generation technology. WIMAX and LTE were officially accepted to be IMT-2000* or (International Mobile Telecommunications of year 2000). WIMAX gains more competitive advantage than LTE because 802.16e was already achieved the standard for a period of time, while the standard of LTE still be in process.
However, these two technologies have the important difference e.g. WIMAX is on the standard of IEEE while LTE was developed on 3GPP. The standard of IEEE is open system more than 3GPP.
The main difference of them is the usage of network; WIMAX required new technology while LTE is evolved from the old one that make LTE gain more competitive advantage because of the exiting users of the old network.
And another important factor is frequency; About half of populations in the world were located in the place that already received the license of using WIMAX such as, TDD 2.3 GHz, 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz.
On the other hand, LTE is more flexible than WIMAX because LTE can be used and set up in any frequencies in the range of 2.1GHz, AWS, 700MHz, 2.6GHz, 900 and 1800MHz. LTE provided more flexibility because of the ability of installing was start from 1.3MHz to 20MHz that lead LTE access to the existing frequencies easily.
IMT-2000* is simply a term used by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to refer to many third generation (3G) wireless technology, that provide higher data speed between mobile phones and base antennas.
Also Known As: IMT2000, IMT stands for "International Mobile Telecommunications"

ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES OF LTE

Advantages of LTE

1. LTE facilitates the current applications to perform on better speed as well as for the new mobile applications
2. LTE decrease the traffic of communication in term of sending data.
3. LTE allows more users to use the same frequency that result in increasing of Mobile Broadband users.
4. LTE separates frequencies into different channel in order to protect the disturbance of each channel; the solution was called “Orthogonal”.
5. LTE offers faster data rate transfer as compare to existing 3G network equipments by using radio waves over the same bandwidth.
6. LTE supports more data capacity because it focuses on VoIP(Voice Over Internet Protocol).
7. LTE allows wireless broadband providers to transition to this new technology without rebuilding their entire networks from the ground up.
8. LTE can also support voice and Short Message Service (SMS) text messaging using existing networks via Generic Access (VoLGA).

Disadvantages of LTE

1. The start-up costs of service providers and consumers for equipment upgrades are too high; new equipments will be needed to be installed.
2. LTE technology need to use additional antennas at network base stations for data transmission. As a result to the network upgrades users need to buy new cell phones to make use of new network infrastructure.

ADVANTAGES VS DISADVANTAGE OF WIMAX

ADVANTAGES VS DISADVANTAGE OF WIMAX
Since, WIMAX is the new tecnology that just introduced to Thailand. So, there are both advantages and disadvantages of WIMAX that still be not improved.
Let's start with Advantages first;
1. WIMAX can send the signal through the wider area.(30 miles or 48 kilometers) eg: The signal can be sent to rural
2. WIMAX has highspeed in term of sending the data that why it can send to very far area.
3. WIMAX is more secure than the old system by providing the monitoring and controling system in order to check the quality
4. Support many working functions such as; picture, sounds and etc.
5. WIMAX can increase the internet users because of the wider area.
6. For the wider area that WIMAX provide, it allowed the rural people to have a chance to learn with new technology
7. There are no problem in term of geography sending signal because the signal has high frequency.
8. Decrease the cost of installing the LAN cable because WIMAX use the signal to send the data.
9. Support the mobility equipments such as; Cell phone, the signal can be sent even it is moving.
10. Decrease the cost of installing the signal transmitters because of the wider area that reduce the frequently of signal transmitter.
Those are all advantages of WIMAX. Then, Let's focus on the other side of WIMAX.
For disadvantages;
1. Because of Wimax is the new technology, many people do not trust in the WMAX.
2. Few people using the technologies of WIMAX.
3. As we said that it can reduce the cost of installing but in fact the signal transmitter of WIMAX are still expensive because they produced in little amount for using.
4. As it is new technology then some equipments of WIMAX are rare.
5. Some country control the sending frequency that must be wait for permission first. This lead to the complication of usage.
Eventhough WIMAX has both advantges and disadvantages but the advantages are more than disadvantages. So, we should use it to gain those advantages and try to improve all disadvantages for our best technology in Thailand.

WHAT IS LTE?
LTE stands for “Long Term Evolution” is the new wireless broadband technology standard that developed by 3GPP or the 3rd Generation Partnership Project , some refer to it as a 4G (fourth generation) technology along with WiMax. 3GPP group first introduced LTE to provide data transfer and afterwards mobile equipment manufacturers and mobile network providers joined this group in 2009 to build new shape of Voice over LTE by using VoLGA (Voice over LTE Generic Access) Forum.
LTE will bring many technical benefits to cellular networks ,the main targets for this evolution are increased data rates that more capacity and increased data speeds with downlink speeds of 100Mbit/s and up to 50Mbit/s uplink rates, improved spectrum efficiency because LTE uses radio spectrum allows more data to transfer at the same bandwidth used by any 3G equipment or device.
Hence, users are bound to get more data transfer at the same speed, improved coverage, reduced latency and packet-optimized system that support multiple Radio Access Technologies.
LTE offers scalable bandwidths, from less than 5MHz up to 20MHz, together with support fiexible carrier bandwidths, from 1.4MHz up to 20MHz. LTE also supports frequency division duplexing (FDD) and time division duplexing (TDD).

What is WIMAX ?

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access), is an IP based that provide a common  framework for wireless connectivity in fixed, portable, and mobile environments.

WiMAX is a wireless digital communications system, also known as IEEE 802.16, that is intended for wireless "metropolitan area networks" or MAN. WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and 3 - 10 miles (5 - 15 km) for mobile stations. In contrast, the WiFi/802.11 wireless local area network standard is limited in most cases to only 100 - 300 feet (30 - 100m) which a lot less than WiMAX.

A WiMAX deployment will essentially have two hardware components :
1) A WiMAX tower;  The tower is not unlike a cell tower, but can provide coverage to an estimated 30-mile radius. The tower connects to the Internet using a high-bandwidth wireline connection or it provide a wireless backhaul to other WiMAX WiMAX towers with LOS (line of sight) microwave links.
2) A WiMAX receiver; The receiver can be anything from a large building-mounted antenna to a small appliance, a laptop card, or even a built-in chip, like the WiFi receivers in PCs and laptops today.

The bandwidth and reach of WiMAX make it suitable for the following potential applications:
  • Connecting WiFi-hotspots with each other and to other parts of the Internet.
  • Providing a wireless alternative to cable and DSL for last mile (last km) broadband access.
  • Providing high-speed mobile data and telecommunications services (4G).
  • Providing a diverse source of Internet connectivity as part of a business continuity plan. That is, if a business has a fixed and a wireless internet connection they are unlikely to be affected by the same service outage.
  • Providing Nomadic connectivity.
